One fine morning, Akbar was discussing foreign affairs with
his courtiers. Suddenly, a messenger of the queen arrived there. She told him
that the queen was having a terrible headache. Akbar, on hearing this news, got
up with a start and said, “What! A headache! I must go to her right now.”
Birbal, on seeing such funny reactions of Akbar, started
grinning, trying hard to control his laughter. Akbar saw him smiling. He asked
him angrily, “Birbal! What kind of insolence is this? Why are you smiling? Have
you forgotten the code of conduct to be followed in court?”
“Majesty, but…..” Birbal tried to say something.
“I don’t want to listen to your nonsense,” shouted Akbar.
“Birbal, you are dismissed from the court. Never ever step again on the land of
this country.”
Birbal calmly saluted Akbar and left. The courtiers who were
jealous of Birbal congratulated themselves in their hearts. Few days passed. One
day, Akbar while having a view of his Kingdom from the window of his castle,
saw Birbal riding a chariot.
Akbar felt very angry. He said, “Birbal, How did you dare
violate my orders?”
“But, I am following your orders, Your Majesty. You asked me
not to step on the land of this country. Since the last three days, I have been
living on this chariot,”
replied Birbal. Akbar could not help laughing at the wit of
Birbal. He embraced him and took back his orders.
